When trucker Jack Burton agreed to take his friend Wang Chi to pick up his fiancee at the airport, he never expected to get involved in a supernatural battle between good and evil. Wang's fiancee has emerald green eyes, which make her a perfect target for an immortal sorcerer named Lo Pan and his three invincible cronies. Lo Pan must marry a girl with green eyes so he can regain his physical form. Now, Jack must save Wang's fiancee from Lo Pan and his henchmen, and win back his stolen truck. But how can he defeat an enemy who has no body?
When Jack Burton wins a card game against his long time friend Wang, Wang explains that he doesn't have Jack's earnings on him, and he'll pay Jack later, due to the fact that he has pick up his girlfriend at the airport. Seeing as how Jack wants his money as soon as possible, he offers to give Wang a ride to the airport. Unfortunately for the both of them, Wang's girlfriend is kidnapped, due to the fact that she is a chinese woman with green eyes, and in order for an immortal creature named David LoPan to turn back into a mortal human, he must marry her. Now it's up to Jack Burton, Wang, and their friends to save her before it's too late.
One of John Carpenter&#39;s most famous movies and definitely a cult classic in its own right. It tells about a trucker named Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), who rather unwillingly gets pulled into an ancient conflict that has resurfaced in San Francisco&#39;s Chinatown. A sorcerer named Lo Pan (James Hong) leads a gang there and has his eyes set on marrying a green-eyed woman in order to break an ancient curse cast upon him by the first emperor of China. And it just so happens that Jack&#39;s friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) has a fiancée with green eyes.<br/><br/>It&#39;s epically silly, but in the best way possible. Carpenter&#39;s films tend to be rather grim in tone, but this easily on the lighter end of his scale. It can still be described as dark fantasy, but it&#39;s far from horror. That being said, some of the special effects are rather gruesome, but also so well done that you cannot help but admire them, even in this modern day and era.<br/><br/>I also really like Jack Burton&#39;s character. He is what would happen if you put a comic relief in the lead role and failed to mention to him that he&#39;s in fact the comic relief. Jack is easily the least capable person in the entire posse and many of his fight scenes end with him failing around in clueless fashion. Yet he is the main character, having a lot of charisma and some singular moments of true badassery. Russell beautifully straddles these two distinct traits, moving from one style of character to another.<br/><br/>Is it Carpenter&#39;s best work? Nah, that still belongs to The Thing. But it is an excellent 80s urban fantasy film and very much worth a watch for all fans of the genre.
My Take: A fun and funny mess of wildly, outlandish proportions.<br/><br/>What do you get when you put sorcery, martial arts, evil wizards, old Chinese folk legends, butt-ugly monsters, over-the-top martial artists with really big hats, a stolen 18-wheeler truck and a wisecracking anti-hero named Jack Burton in a blender, with John Carpenter as your chef? A fun and funny concept, and that&#39;s exactly what BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is and nothing more, but what else does it need to be? BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA may have abandoned any form of common sense or plot, but what the heck! Fun is the word here, and fun it is. Who could such a totally plot-less and silly experience be engaging for 99 minutes? It&#39;s wild, wacky entertainment, that&#39;s why. There&#39;s not a single moment in the film that utters sense, but as long as you know how to wave the magic wand to make such silliness work like magic, you don&#39;t need anything else.<br/><br/>The plot is, well there really isn&#39;t any. Just wisecracking hero Jack Burton (Kurt Russell at his wackiest) leading his posse of wizards and martial artists inside slimy dungeons hidden inside old factory buildings and sewers to find an evil wizard (James Hong) who needs two green-eyed maidens to maintain his youth. Of course this calls for ugly monsters, wacky bits of humor, moments of camp, the most over-the-top martial arts battles this side of a &quot;Power Rangers&quot; episode and Russell uttering such memorable lines such as &quot;Ol&#39; Jack always says… what the hell?&quot; or &quot;I was born ready.&quot;. Okay, could you want anything else? If your looking for sense, it&#39;s right along that corridor. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA may not be for everyone, but once you know the concept, it&#39;s simply hard to dislike.<br/><br/>Rating: **** out of 5.
Carpenter has always been a skilful genre mechanic, breathing life into old forms; if he stubs his toes up against the bamboo curtain this time, there is still more enjoyable sly humour than in most slug-fests.
It is unknown and totally up for personal opinion. Some believe that he was attacked and killed by the beast hitching a ride on his truck, whereas others are confident that Jack would have defeated the creature and continued on his journey. At one point, a sequel was announced, but later scrapped, starring Kurt Russell. This would suggest that Jack Burton was alive and lived to fight another day. Upon seeing that Lo-Pan&#39;s has been killed, out of sadness and anger, he either lost temper and uncontrollably exploded, or allowed himself to explode on purpose in order to commit suicide. The Theatrical Version lacks the Kurt Russel comment &quot;Fuck it!&quot;. The later released VHS contains this comment but lacks some other footage of the turf war between the two clans. The DVD and Blu-ray are uncut.
